Small
Business And
Marketing Consultants
It has always been difficult for small business proprietors to
make the the decision to employ a small business consultant to
assist them in running their business.
And yet marketing is one of the foundation posts of a successful
small business - a successful any business. It is an aspect of
business that most small business owners have a poor
understanding of. They often think marketing and advertising are
one and the same.
If the small business owner has the time, and she may very well
in the beginning of the start up, she can do much of the work
that a marketing consulting can do for herself., but she has to
know what to do.
It is like sawing wood and hammering a nail and screwing a
screw. Most people know how to do that but most people cannot
build a house or even a cabinet.
A big part of the reason is price. Consultants are not
inexpensive!
And the small business consultancy industry is not
blameless, either. It does a poor job of promoting itself to
small business. Many of them have that government disease of
incorrectly defining what a small business is.
Most government departments define a small business as one who
has less than one hundred employees. If that is a small business
then their has to be another category for the kind of clients I
have. Restaurants, for example, a large portion of our clients
would never employ 100 people no matter how large they grew. An
independent supermarket with 20 staff is quite a profitable
size.
And how about all the home based business owners who operate on
their own? They wouldn't even get a look in!
The small business consulting industry has tended to ignore the
boutique businesses which have made this and any other nation
strong, and no-one else seems to be looking after them
specifically. It is no wonder they view consultants with
suspicion.
My firm was started in 1969 with the sole aim of
providing assistance to those extra small business owners in
their efforts to maximize profits. Our aim has not changed.
