New Clients
From Old Or Working The Room
We had a call from one of our Wedding Celebrant
friends in a bit of a tizzy. Celebrants are always calling my
wife because they think that Vlady has all the answers
about wedding matters and she usually does.
The celebrant
was an long-standing client of mine and I had assisted her with
setting up her new business and getting it off the ground
with marketing advice etc.
Wendy had a
flourishing and profitable marriage celebrancy business but
she had moved to a new locality and her enquiries from
locals was almost non-existent and her website tended to
discourage enquiries from her old location because of the
difficulty of distance. However, she was accepting these just to
keep her business going.
"I am following all the
marketing procedures you told me to," said Wendy," and they are
not working in my new location".
"Well they must be
working a bit, you are getting calls".
"But not enough.
Your magic does not work in this new location.".
So I
asked her if she was following the marketing strategies
we had formulated to the letter, or had she changed some
of the steps.
"Not a one!" she said. Except and she got
that naughty look on her face like a child who has just been
found out.
Wendy was naturally shy. One of her
marketing strategies was to spend time at the ceremony making
certain she greeted each guest, have a short conversation
with them, and give as many people as possible a business
card. She would end each conversation with: if you know
anyone getting married please recommend me.
Originally she
found this very stressful But she persevered and as
time went on she became known to so many in her area that she
found it an easy and natural thing to do.
In the new
area she was faced with strangers who did not know her.
She had baulked at
"working
the room"
. It was just a teensy-weensy deviation from her plan she
did not think it would matter.
I convinced her to start the
practice at her next local wedding. "What makes you think it
will work? she asked.
Because it works for my hundreds
and hundreds of other clients and it works for thousand and
thousands of politicians who try to get elected. People like
to do business with people they know personally, even if it's a
short conversation at a wedding.
Conclusion: Wendy rang and
said that she had booked three local weddings all initiated from
the wedding the previous week. That will continue as it did in
her old locality.
Hey! It's not just Vlady that has all the answers! It is so hard
to be humble!
